Fall is a favorite season for many people. The weather starts getting a little cooler, things are beginning to slow down and preparations for the holidays are in full swing. For many others, fall is not so festive. Many people get sick during the fall months, allergies can flare up for some, and many don't like the steady decrease in hours of sunlight, sometimes leading to seasonal depression. Here are five self care tips on how to get through the season without incident. 1. Wear a scarf The large intestine channel runs up the arms, across the shoulders, up the neck, over the face and ends next to the nose. As many people now know, the health of our gastrointestinal tract plays a big part in our immunity, so keeping the large intestine channel warm and preventing exposure from the elements will help keep you healthy. ...

There is a very delicate balance to hormones in the body. If any hormone becomes in excess or deficient, it will affect the other hormones in the body. Today, I am going to discuss excess of estrogen, also known as estrogen dominance. Excess of estrogen can happen in two ways. A person can either have more estrogen than normal. Or a person can have decreased levels of progesterone. Either way, the gap between these two hormones has increased, changing their ratio.   Functions of Estrogen Estrogen has many healthy effects on the body when at the optimal level. Estrogen is best known for preparing the uterus for pregnancy or menstrual cycle. Other functions of estrogen include body temperature regulation, memory function, protects heart from cholesterol, helps liver regulate cholesterol production, and increases bone density and strength. symptoms of estrogen dominance Estrogen Dominance Symptoms Estrogen dominance symptoms in women include weight gain especially around hips, waist and...

There are many factors involved with feeling tired. If you are overtired, Traditional Chinese Medicine is able to pinpoint the culprit, give some extra pep and help you kick those afternoon blues. In TCM, the idea of treatment is to find the root of the problem instead of simply treating the symptoms. In the case of fatigue, there are many possible root causes to feeling tired including: stress, depression, over exercising, lack of sleep, poor diet, poor absorption of nutrients and vitamin deficiency. Of course, these can overlap and one can exacerbate the other. Possible TCM Syndromes Spleen qi deficiency and dampness This mainly comes from poor digestion and malabsorption of nutrients from an insufficient diet. Associated symptoms are a pale complexion, gas and bloating, to name a few. Dampness is excessive mucus and a feeling of heaviness in the head and body usually seen in overweight individuals. Since food is not digested well,...

'Tis the season for flu shots, runny noses, coughs, and sniffles. Being exposed to different viruses and having your immune systems fight them off is what makes your immune system stronger.  If your child catches a virus and it becomes really severe or seems to linger on for more than a couple weeks, this is evidence that your child's immune system is not as strong as it could be. What may be surprising to you is that what your child eats can either strengthen or weaken your child's immune system. 7 Things you can do to help your child Limit sugar intake No or very limited dairy products Limited cold foods Eat warm, healing foods Probiotics and prebiotics Hydration Acupressure   Limit sugar Sugar causes inflammation in the body.  When your child is sick their body already has some inflammation.  Some inflammation is necessary to fight off a virus or bacteria, but too much...

When people think about kids with autism they don't usually think about acupuncture (Chinese medicine) as a modality that can help.  Acupuncture actually can help tremendously with autism.  How acupuncture addresses autism, as well as any other concern or problem, is to look at the root cause of the imbalance in the child.  These are the small signs and symptoms that were seen before the diagnosis as well as the behavior, sleep patterns, appetite and other manifestations. With children, we start with looking at their character type.  In acupuncture there are five different character types: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water.  These character types help us to understand why people behave, react, and interact in certain ways.  If you want to know more about the character types and determine what character type your child is, click here and you can sign up to receive my free e-book "Breaking Your Child's Code". We then...

As I start building my practice and spreading the word, I have many people ask me how I came up with the name Blue Butterfly.  Let me tell you it was a process.  A bit of a stressful process to think of something that would resonate with me and be attractive to clients, especially kids. We will start with Butterfly. As soon as I started to think about a name the word "transformation" kept coming up for me - in my head, in classes, in readings.  But using the actual word sounded too serious, too weighty, too burdensome.  So I started thinking about what in this world goes through transformations.  Butterfly, caterpillar, moth, phoenix, etc.  I ruminated on these for close to a month while I thought about if I wanted another word to go with it. Coming up with Blue came about a little more organically. I had already had it in the...
