Kids love acupuncture!
Needles can be used on all kids. Needles are painlessly placed and immediately removed for infants and toddlers. As the child gets older, I will match their age to the amount of time the needles are left in (A 10-year-old would keep the needles in for 10 minutes). Usually nothing is felt at all. If there is any discomfort, it is often described as a mosquito bite. Kids also don’t require as many needles as an adult.
For those kids who are not ready for needles, there are several other equally effective non-needle techniques. In addition to needles, other tools include Tui na (massage like stimulation), acupressure, Shonishin (Japanese style non-needle acupuncture), and laser acupuncture. Shonishin uses funny looking tools that help to stimulate the meridians to flow correctly and to stimulate certain acupuncture points. Most kids describe it as a tickling feeling.
No matter the technique, pediatric acupuncture techniques are brief and gentle. Kids are not required to lay still on the table during their treatment session. Kids are treated sitting on a couch, sitting on the table, sitting on parent’s laps, even sitting on the floor. Kids can even play with toys, read books, or watch a video during the session.
Some general signs you may see in your child after an acupuncture treatment are your child taking a longer nap or taking a nap if they don’t usually, having a larger appetite, better digestion, and improved sleep at night.
Acupuncture can help reduce or eliminate any issues your child may be having including colic, chronic ear infections, anxiety, ADHD, Autism, PMS, painful periods, acne, headaches, pain, and asthma. If you have a special needs child, acupuncture can help reduce symptoms with that as well including seizures, sequalae from a stroke, complications from chemo/radiation (nausea and vomiting), and TBI.
