Has your daughter ever had to stay home from school because of her period pain? Or is your daughter on hormonal contraceptive and the side effects are almost or worse than the PMS symptoms or period pain? If you said yes to any of the above questions you are not alone. In a recent YouGov survey, 88% of the respondents (1157 U.S. Females surveyed) reported experiencing some type of period pain (migraines, cramps, muscle aches). All but 7% of those people say they use painkillers to help them deal with the symptoms. 65% hadn’t talked to their doctor about their pain and just considered it “normal”. 4% of the respondents reported period pain had affected their ability to do their jobs and 30% reported period pain being so painful they needed to take a day off work.
These are sad and scary statistics. What is even more scary is that more and more pre – teens and teenagers are being placed on hormonal contraceptives during a very critical time of growth in their life . Some of the side effects of hormonal contraceptives for young girls include nutrient deficiencies, impaired bone density and increased risk of depression.
I’m going to let you in on a secret – PMS, cramps and period pain are not normal, and you don’t have to put up with it. Most reasons that women suffer during their periods can be addressed with food changes. Synthetic hormones will cause your daughter to stop producing her own hormones, so when she decides that she is ready to start a family, all of those symptoms she had previously will usually come back as bad or worse than before and may cause her some issues with getting pregnant naturally.
