25 Sep Autism and Acupuncture
When people think about kids with autism they don’t usually think about acupuncture (Chinese medicine) as a modality that can help. Acupuncture actually can help tremendously with autism. How acupuncture addresses autism, as well as any other concern or problem, is to look at the root cause of the imbalance in the child. These are the small signs and symptoms that were seen before the diagnosis as well as the behavior, sleep patterns, appetite and other manifestations.
With children, we start with looking at their character type. In acupuncture there are five different character types: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. These character types help us to understand why people behave, react, and interact in certain ways. If you want to know more about the character types and determine what character type your child is, click here and you can sign up to receive my free e-book “Breaking Your Child’s Code”.
We then determine the pattern causing the imbalance. The six main patterns of autism are
- Qi blocked in the head
- Echo disease
- Brain damage
Once we determine the character type and pattern we then move on to the treatment. We look to the parent and the child to help decide the best way to proceed with treatment. There are many different ways to go about treating children which include needles and non-needle techniques. For the sensitive children, we will use the non-needle techniques. For the more robust children, needles will be the best way to see any results. With many of these children, staying still may be very difficult for them. If needles are used on these children, a “in and out” needling method is used. Autistic children will need regular acupuncture treatments to help heal the chronic imbalance. Suggest starting with weekly treatments for approximately eight weeks and then re-evaluating.
Other modalities that can be very helpful for autistic children include craniosacral, herbs, supplements and especially diet. Next week I will follow up with the part 2 on autism: Autism and Nutrition. Please like my Facebook fan page so that you do not miss next week’s post as well as any future posts.
